This month’s artist is:

Deborah Blake

A resident of Oneonta for over 20 years, Deborah Blake has an educational background in Psychology, Theater, and Secondary English Education–so naturally, she decided to pursue a career in jewelry making. She has been creating classic gemstone necklaces, bracelets and earrings for about 10 years. For Deborah, jewelry making started out as a hobby, and grew (with the help of all those people who said, “Where did you get that necklace, I want to buy one!”) into an obsession. A self-confessed “bead junky”, Deborah enjoys the feel of the natural stones, and the challenges of pattern, color, texture and design.

In 1999, frustrated by the lack of dependable, classy places for artists and craftspeople to sell their wares locally, Deborah and potter Ellie Stromberg opened The Artisans’ Guild. Their dream was to run The Guild as a cooperative, so that all the participating artists could share in the feeling of ownership and achievement. Their aim was to create a shop that would provide a high-class venue for local artisans, and a place for area people to be able to buy well-made, reasonably priced, locally produced goods. They also hoped to boost the local economy by aiding in the resurgence of Main Street, and by keeping the money spent by area residents in the community. Deborah has the title of Executive Director (which impresses all her relatives), and has acted as manager since the store opened.

When not at the shop, or making jewelry, Deborah can often be found teaching jewelry making classes, working in the garden behind her 100 year old farmhouse, or playing with her cats.
